California Missionary Performance Evaluations 1817–1820
At the Museum | Farrand Auditorium
Job evaluations by the Commissary Prefects of the Alta California missions in the early nineteenth century provide insight into the Franciscan perspective on what makes a “good missionary.” The Commissary Prefects had to write biographical sketches and evaluations of each of the missionaries in their jurisdiction.
In this free public lecture presented by the Santa Barbara County Archaeological Society, UCSB Department of Anthropology graduate student Elisabeth Rareshide, M.A., will share insights from two reports currently housed in the Santa Bárbara Mission Archive-Library. Fr. Vicente Francisco de Sarrı́a’s 1817 report and Fr. Mariano Payeras’ 1820 report provide a basis for evaluating the work of missionary friars in the years just prior to Mexican independence from Spain.
No tickets or reservations required, but it is recommended to arrive a little early to ensure a seat. For questions about the Santa Barbara County Archaeological Society or the upcoming meetings, please contact SBCAS President Glenn Russell, Ph.D., by email.
