Art Meets Science: Pigments from Nature, Inspiration from Van Gogh

At the Museum | Broder Patio

April 23, 2022 / 11:00 AM–1:30 PM

This event is sold out.

Explore the colorful world of natural pigments! Discover how the lush natural colors of insects, plants, fungi, and more have been used by artists for centuries.

Learn about the surprising natural history of cochineal insects as a natural pigment, and impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh’s use of this pigment. Get hands-on experience working with cochineal and practicing the shibori folded-textile dye technique (the artistically rich Japanese forerunner of tie-dye). Artist Robin Hamlin of the Santa Barbara Fiber Arts Guild leads this fun workshop blending entomology and art.

Accidents happen! We will be working with dye liquids that can stain clothing. Please dress accordingly.

Proof of vaccination required.

This event is part of the Community Partner program in collaboration with Santa Barbara Museum of Art's current exhibition, “Through Vincent’s Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources” on view from February 27 to May 22, 2022.
