Science Pub: Lemurs with a Side of Sulfur

At Dargan's Irish Pub & Restaurant, 18 E. Ortega Street

February 10, 2025 / 6:30 PM–8:00 PM

Enjoy a special two-for-one talk showcasing the research of two UCSB Ph.D. students! First, hear from Kacie Ring from the Briggs Lab in the Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology Department. Ring studies animal communities' responses to anthropogenic change. Hear about her field work in Madagascar with lemurs and her exploration of how significant habitat change alters the structure of and interaction among animal communities, and the zoonotic diseases they transmit.

Next, Marianna Karagiannis from the Valentine Lab and NOISE Lab will enlighten us on sulfur. That characteristic sulfur smell is certainly no one's favorite, but it reveals some fascinating environmental processes. We'll learn why sulfur matters on Earth and across the universe, from climate solutions to the search for extraterrestrial life. Karagiannis studies sulfur cycling and carbon preservation. Her research focuses on how sulfur can aid in removing carbon from the atmosphere and preserve evidence of life in the rock record.

Join our fun and friendly conversation and quench your thirst for knowledge about science and nature in this ongoing series of free science talks held on the second Monday of every month. No tickets or reservations required, but be sure to get to Dargan’s (18 E. Ortega St. in downtown Santa Barbara) early to secure a seat and order your favorite food and drink.
